All Small Six INLINE FORD SIX RACING 144-250

This relates to all small sixes
Hi guys i am most interested in inline racing, i race a little 200 in my 1967 Falcon Wagon in Australia. What i am after is info on some old stuff, lets go back to May 1960, Hot Rod May 1960 has the 3 144 engines on the front, i’d like to know.

What happened to them? Is there a follow up article in another Hot Rod magazine, did they ever dyno the 2 engines they hadn’t done for the original story.

Secondly, what brand Rocker cover is on the engines, it has the Falcon script, is it a Holman Moody or Bill Stroppe. Obviously pre dates the Edelbrock ones.

Thirdly, i just missed out on buying one of those rocker covers, does anyone have one or an Edelbrock one.

Lastly feel free to post up any small Ford Six racing or modified engines, race engine’s
 
Welcome to the Ford Six site CarmeloLabadie, tell us some more about your Racing Falcon Wagon. I can't answer all of your questions directly but can give you some general info of what I learned from talking to many of those that were involved in some of these type Ford race car projects back in the 1960's and 1970's. So it was very common back then that these Race Cars were still owned by Ford they leased them to be used by the teams or the drivers for one $ dollar, sadly after the racing career time was over a car it was then returned to Ford and it was then disposed of there were a few that were sold out right so it all depended on the deal that was made and also if the car survived during its race career as well as after. Yes some of these engines were Dyno'ed and that info is quite interesting, it is listed in one of those Hot Rod articles "Making the Falcon Fly" that is one of several our site I will put a link for it here.

I came across this early Hot Rod article several years back in doing some research lots of good info showing what they were doing to the first Falcon 144 Six's in mid1959 to get them ready for the new race series

Just as soon as the first 1960 Ford Falcons hit the show rooms in about September of 1959 people started to Hot Rod and race these little Falcons. But even before the cars were available to the general public three companies were busy building their performance parts for them these were Bill Strope and Associates, Eldenbrock, & Holmen Moody. This article also shows for the first time how a 3 X 1V (Tri-Power) Carb installation was done as well as the amount of power they were able to get out of those little 144's. Edited

Plus if you wanted too a 144 can be made into a 170 easily and probably at a low cost! The 144's and 170's share the same bore size, so all you need is to drop in the 170 rotating assembly, i.e. The Crank, Rods, and Pistons. Also if you could find one of the now rare early 1963 1/2 to 1964 1/2 200 4 main crankshaft's it would drop right into a 144 or 170 block along with a set of 170 or 200 connecting Rods you would need a custom set of Pistons or maybe a set of the Australian Piston's could work building a 182 or more cu. In. short block.

Eldenbrock did make their own valve covers and all three of them designed their own 3 X 1V intakes not sure if Holmen and Moody & Bill Strope made their own valve covers or had them made for them but there where several other companies back in those days in the Southern California area that made the Aluminum fined type valve covers such as Offenhauser, Cal Customs, Edmond's, and Sharpe. Yes there also used to be a Falcon Script valve cover being made not too long back don't know if it's like the one you saw though. Since the new Falcon's with their 144 Six's hit the Ford dealer show rooms in mid September of 1959 they were building parts for the first race cars probably in about May or June of 1959 hard to say which was the very first valve cover made but we might only be talking about a few days or maybe a couple of weeks difference between any of the three company's involved in that first Falcon racing program. There are still the Clifford's and maybe the Offy's Valve Covers being made new and Offy still makes their 3 X 1V intake and linkage parts new.

Below is a link to a post I did last month on a Falcon Six Holman & Moody Race car that was built by its shop employees to show what these early Falcon race cars looked like and shows how the chassis were setup during that period. I seen this this car for sale and it was sold in around 2014.
