Machine Shop Blues

I found a 250 Head for my 66 Mustang from a 77 Maverick. I have talked to 6 machine shops and all have told me that aside from a 3 angle valve job that they will not do any porting, polishing, matching exhaust port to the gaskets or etc.......One shop said that they leave "those fancy things the the boys in California".

I even carried my Ford 6 handbook with me to show them what I wanted.

I don't want to spend a thousand bucks with Clifford and I'm not very mechanically inclined.

Any thoughts on this matter.....I live in the DFW, Texas area.

Listen to them.

An old trick called 'Port mismatching', and non-polished surfaces are the answer.

Port mistmatching? As long as the exhast header is larger at the gasket face than than the heads exhast ports, (think about that for a moment)

then you'll find the engine will perform better than something which has been port matched.

Non-polished surfaces? Fuel ecconomy suffers when you polish the inlet ports, as fuel drops out of suspension. You may gain 1 hp, but loose 5 mpg.

The exhast ports can be polished, however, with no issues at all.

Trust your machinist. They are not trying to make margin, they are trying to make horpower without loosing gas mileage
