3G 1wire alternator belt squeal

If you've done a 3G 1 wire alternator swap, how did you deal with the belt squeal?

I've replaced the belt twice, cleaned the pulleys and gotten the belt as tight as I can get it.

Only squeals on start up and only for a couple of seconds. But, it's loud and annoying.

I can put a double pulley on the alternator, but I'm going to be adding power steering and will need the second crank pulley. So that's only a short time solution.

I do have a smaller diameter crank pulley I can add that's used on factory p/s, but I'm using a Borgerson pump and I don't know about the alignment and what effect it will have on the pump speed (slower) if it does align.

Ok, your turn.

Thanks

Charlie

Use a 289 hipo pulley. You should also break in a new belt and scuff the old pulleys.

1. How do I break in a new belt?

2. 289 hipo pulley on the alternator? Or?

3. Where do I find such a pulley?

4. I scuffed the crank pulley with a scotch brite. Do I need to use something more aggressive?

Thank you for your response and suggestions. Appreciate it.

Measure the diameter of the crank pulley you are using and the pulley on the alternator. If you are at more than a 2:1 ratio, install a larger pulley on the alternator that is half the size of the crank pulley or even slightly bigger. That will help. But with a 130 amp alternator it's still pretty tough with only one belt. Unfortunately all the replacement 3G's seem to have gone to 130 amps and you can't even find the 90 amp version the last time I looked.

It looks like Bosch still makes a small case 95 amp 3G, but they're real proud of it at $150-200

I will do that. I'm pretty sure the pulley is too small in that case - just eyeballing.

Thanks for the response.

Always good advice on this forum.
Did not know the 90 amp alt was getting scarce as I wanted one for my Bronco. I seem to recall a list of vehicles someone provided on this forum of vehicles that had the 90 amp alt. Could go to picnpul and find one if new which vehicle to look for.

Basically you are looking for the one with the mounting holes 7 inches apart and 4 holes in between the ribs on the face instead of 2. They are in mid 90's cars.

I found this partial list for 130's but I bet these cars came with 95's as well:

- 94-95 Mustang V8
- 94-98 V6's
- Other cars with the 3.8L motor in it. 5.0L cougars with the 94-95 style motor and others.
- There are a lot of cars with the 3g alt that will fit. Late 90's is when Ford switched to the 4G alternator.

- Mid 90s Taurus and escort. Says 130A on the back etched into it.
- 93-96 Taurus 3.0 V-6 (non SHO)
- 94-96 Mustang 3.8 V-6
- 94-95 Mustang 5.0
- 94-96 Thunderbird 3.8 V-6 (non SC)
- 95-96 Windstar 3.0 V-6 (most are 3.8's)
- 93-96 E/F series Trucks/Vans 4.9 L6*
- 96 Sable 3.0 V-6
- 94-96 Cougar 3.8 V-6

Excellent info Econoline, adistionally Hot Rod magazine did a very good article on the 1G to 3G Alternor swaps back last year (2018) in the Dec or Nov issue. Good luck (y)

The hipo pulley is for the alternator. Wash a new belt in soap and warm water to make sure all the release agent is cleaned off. After you scuff the pulley spray it with brake cleaner.

Not all fan belts are created equal. :) Make sure the new belt is wide enough and does not sit too low in the groove. It should sit high in the groove flush with the pulley top. If it sits too low it will slip. Gate belts are pretty good.

Did you get a small case or large case 3g 130amp? Do you have a pic you can post?

near infinite list of '60s/70s ford pulleys here, just ask (listed by yr/model).
I keep it for "proper ratio pulley in a front dress change" when seeking that or to go up or dwn an extra shive.
(I think I got all the i6s sectioned out too). or may B its the 250s only due ta my motor...

Large case
I preped the pulleys exactly as you suggest.
The alt pulley is way to small - I now realize - and is for an 11 mm belt, not 3/8, so the grove is a hair wider and belt sits a hair down in the groove.
I have a hipo pulley on order.
I will need a longer belt and I will prep it as you suggest.

Thank you, again, for your response. I think I've got it handled, now.

Thanks for the response.

I have a hipo pulley on order but now I'm wondering if the center hole will fit on 17 mm G3 shaft.

What is the shaft size on a stock alternator?

Always something.

I am using a double pulley.
IIRC, I used a washer to shim the alternator a bit for better alignment.

I've tried finding a washer to shim the pulley out a bit, but couldn't find one with a 17 mm hole.

I'm going to put the power steering back on so a double pulley won't work.

I've checked and double checked the alignment and it appears to be spot on.

Also, the 3G pulley uses a 10 mm belt, not a 3/8 belt, so the belt rides a hair low in the groove.
