Hello All

So was able to get a 170ci in decent shape with a Fordomatic 2 speed with shifting issues (until warmed up). Have an opportunity to get a C4 auto with floor shifter out of an early Mustang. I currently have a fully functioning 144ci with 3 speed on column 2.77 manual tranny which I am thinking of swapping out for the 170/c4. Any words of wisdom/cautions for this? The car originally had a 170 with 2 speed auto so I have the auto pedal assembly and original auto column which I would look at a shifter delete and go with floor shift. Thoughts???

You can keep the column shifter if you want. All you need is a C4 detent plate that installs in the top of the 2 speed column. You can switch out the shift indicator with a 'green dot' one. Not sure if other 3 speed auto indicator will fit your column. May be able to use later year linkage to the trans.

For a floor shft, you'd want to get the collar off a floor shift manual column to eliminate the column shifter.

Can't advise for your transmission mount, several companies sell a c4 adapter mount.

C4 is going to have a larger drive shaft yoke and u-joint than the 2 speed. There are some 7-3/4 rear end yokes that fit the larger u-joint. I actually have one that I'm not going to use because I decided to swap rear ends. This would be better than running 2 sizes of u-joints. Drive shaft length may also be affected.

Forgot to mention, you might need to go at the transmission tunnel with a BFH or cut and move it up some at the firewall to clear the C4 bell housing.

Thanks for the info and advice frozenrabbit. Still debating the c4 due to all the mods required. I really don't want to modify the tranny tunnel to make something work. Also now looking at a t5 solution but that is $$$$.

Chad, have the handbook and studied it for options as well as other forums but nothing is jumping out as a workable/economical solution just yet.

Still thinking and weighing out my options......maybe just mate the 170 with my current 2.77 3 spd manual for now.

C3 auto is heaps smaller and found on 1978 to 1983 Fox cars. It had a Small bellhousing which jumps to 136 teeth like the C4, but it is physically a smaller automatic that, should fit. It has the same ratios as a C4, but was designed in West Germany for the rear drive Capris, Taunus, Cortina, Granada and Escorts 10 years after the C4, it uses a special flexplate and starter, but its excellent and cheap.

You all can blow it up,

print it out,

and use it as a dart board if I make a mistake....

Hit the green tick for 1 point, my drivers side left eye scores a 20...

Back to Automatic for the people....
